US film, music industries roll out anti-piracy program
Mar 1st 2013, 04:54

WASHINGTON--A new "copyright alert" system has begun rolling out this week in the United States in an effort to curb online piracy. The system, informally known as "six strikes," is a voluntary effort of the music and film industries, with the largest Internet service providers participating. The program will use warnings and could result in slowed or suspended Internet connections, but users will not lose Web access entirely. Still, some civil liberties groups and Internet activists call it too invasive and warn it could unfairly penalize some users. It is being coordinated by the Center for Copyright Information, created by the music and cinema industries and the five largest ...

Mar 1st 2013, 05:28

DAVAO CITY, Philippines—An uncanny silence now engulfs Felda Sahabat 17, a community in the seaside village of Tanjung in Tanduo, Lahad Datu following nearly an hour of gun fight between Malaysian security forces and members of the Sulu sultanate's "royal army," the short wave station Free Radio Sarawak near Sabah reported Friday.   Another SW station based in Kota Kinabalu said more Malaysian security forces in full battle gear were seen heading for Tanduo and were expected to beef up security forces stationed there when  the stand-off between the two sides started February 12, three days after followers of Sultan Jamalul Kiram III landed in the village.   Both ...

Global WARMING? Met Office figures reveal winter was fourth in last five years to be COLDER than average
Mar 1st 2013, 05:29

Cold weather usually requires some degree of hibernation.

But if you feel like the urge to curl up in your duvet and never leave the house has been getting stronger over the past few winters, well – you're right.

Because four out of five of them have been chillier than average, according to the Met Office.

There is hope on the horizon, however. Today marks the beginning of spring – albeit in the meteorological calendar.

Living in a box: The desperate workers forced to live in tiny 'coffin' apartments of Tokyo - which still cost up to £400 a month to rent
Mar 1st 2013, 05:25

The Japanese capital is one of the most crowded cities in the world and to cash in on the chronic housing problem, landlords have developed what are known as 'geki-sema' or share houses. Little more than cupboards, the tiny cubicles have just enough room for a single person and a few of their possessions.

Amazon's human robots: They trek 15 miles a day around a warehouse, their every move dictated by computers checking their work. Is this the dystopian future of the British workplace?
Mar 1st 2013, 05:21

Most people in Rugeley, Staffordshire, are glad Amazon has opened a warehouse, believing that any sort of work is better than no work at all, but many have been taken aback by the conditions. Many in the town are grateful for the jobs Amazon has created, but they are also angry about the quality of them.
