Magnus Carlsen considers Levon Aronian to be his main rival for title of world chess champion
8:30, 31 January, 2013

YEREVAN, JANUARY 31, ARMENPRESS: Leader of FIDE ranking Magnus Carlsen has considered Levon Aronian to be his main rival for the title of world chess champion in the interview with Russian "sport express".
"My main rival is Levon Aronian. He has numerously proved to be one of the best chess players of the world. He would spare no effort for becoming world champion," Carlsen said.
Norwegian chess player has launched this year with a victory. Carlsen played in the 75th Tata Steel Chess Tournament from 11–27 January in Wijk aan Zee. In the 13 round tournament, he scored 10 points (seven wins, six draws), winning clear first 1½ points ahead of second-place finisher Aronian.
He is a triple champion of London «Chess Classic» tournament.
Levon Aronian is currently 3rd world chess player by individual rating.

2 Wounded in Shooting at Atlanta Middle School
Feb 1st 2013, 04:02

Two people have been wounded, including a 14-year-old student, in another U.S. school shooting, this time in Atlanta, Georgia.
Scene outside Price Middle School in Atlanta, Ga., after a shooting Thursday.
Police say the second victim is a teacher at Price Middle School and say one person, another student, was arrested. Other details were not immediately available.
The shooting comes as the U.S. Senate considers President Barack Obama's proposals for tighter gun laws. They include reviving the expired ban on military-style assault weapons and deeper background checks for gun buyers.
Gun violence has become a major issue in the United States since the December massacre of 20 young children and six staff members in a Connecticut elementary school by a mentally-deranged gunman.

VIJIMAMBO: Kofi Annan Tackles Drug Trafficking in West Africa

VIJIMAMBO
Kofi Annan Tackles Drug Trafficking in West Africa
Feb 1st 2013, 03:25

Former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan launched a commission Thursday to tackle drug trafficking in West Africa as the region increasingly becomes a stopover point for cocaine and marijuana shipments from the Americas to Europe.
"The massive surge in drug trafficking over the last decade presents a serious and growing threat to the region's stability and development," said Annan. "Left unchecked, illegal drug trafficking could compromise the encouraging progress that West African nations have made in strengthening democracy and promoting human and economic development."
The 10-member commission, headed by former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, will raise awareness, promote regional capacity to deal with the problem, and develop policy recommendations for political leaders, he said. The Commission on the Impact of Drug Trafficking on Governance, Security and Development in West Africa is sponsored by the Kofi Annan Foundation
The U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime said in a report last year that cocaine trafficking in West and Central Africa generates some $900 million annually for criminal networks.
In July, the Executive Director of the UNODC, Yury Fedotov, said some 30 tons of cocaine were trafficked to West Africa in 2011. He also reported an increase in heroin trafficking, as evidenced by an upsurge in seizures from 20 kilograms seized in 2008 to almost 400 kilograms in 2011. Methamphetamine laboratories have also recently been discovered in West Africa, he said.
The tiny coup-prone nation of Guinea-Bissau served as the entry point for drug smuggling in West Africa about a decade ago, Annan said, and is now frequently dubbed a "narcostate."
In Guinea-Bissau key members of the military have been named as complicit in the trade, including several army and navy chiefs who are now on the United States' "drug kingpin" list. The infusion of illicit cash has emboldened an already bloated army, and fueled several coups.
But the trade has in recent years moved along the continent's western coast and through its porous borders in the Sahel, Annan said.
Annan blamed the international community for ignoring the threat posed by corrupted states like Guinea-Bissau.
"As an international community we tend to be rather short-sighted. We have to be careful how we deal with failed states," Annan said. "We ignored Somalia for 20 years until it came back to bite us in the form of central piracy, and everybody then woke up. And by then it had done lots of damage to the whole region and to global commerce. In a way we are doing the same with Guinea-Bissau. That's where it started, and we have allowed it to fester," he said.
Annan said drug traffickers have linked with terrorist groups in the region, who are threatening regional stability as they threaten to take the reins of power in Mali and other parts of the Sahel.
And another concern for regional leaders: West Africans are also starting to use the drugs. "We have ceased to be just transit zone. We have become manufacturing zone and consuming zone," Obasanjo said. "We don't want it to reach an epidemic trend. We want to stop it and reverse it."
Yet Annan acknowledged his commission is "not a police force," and cannot hold smugglers, criminal gangs, terrorists, or corrupt officials accountable.

"All governments and people in this region have to be aware and do whatever they can to contain it," he said. "But we also rely on our partners in Europe, in Latin America and the U.S. to work with us in dealing with this menace."

VIJIMAMBO: 14 dead, 80 injured in Mexico City explosion at oil company’s headquarters

VIJIMAMBO
14 dead, 80 injured in Mexico City explosion at oil company's headquarters
Feb 1st 2013, 04:00

At least 14 people have died after an explosion rocked the headquarters of state oil company Pemex in Mexico City, officials say.
It is not known what caused the blast in Mexico City
More than 80 were injured in the blast, Mexican Interior Minister Miguel Angel Osorio Chong said.
Emergency services are searching for people trapped in the rubble, the BBC's Will Grant reports from the scene.
Last September, 30 people died in an explosion at a Pemex gas plant in northern Mexico.
"We have 13 dead at the scene and one more at the hospital," the interior minister told reporters.
"There are more than 80 wounded and we continue to look for survivors in the debris."
The 54-floor Pemex Executive Tower, which houses hundreds of employees, is located in a busy commercial area of Mexico City.
Television pictures showed rubble from the blast spread out on to the street in front of the building, and Red Cross ambulances on the scene attending to the injured, our correspondent in Mexico City reports.

Police have cordoned off the streets around the building.
At this stage there is no official explanation for the explosion, our correspondent says.
Trapped
Relatives of employees were gathering outside the building in search of information about their loved ones, local media report.
Some are said to have tried to reach employees on their mobile phones but had no reply.
"The place shook, we lost power and suddenly there was debris everywhere. Colleagues were helping us out of the building," eyewitness Cristian Obele said.
"We were talking and all of sudden we heard an explosion with white smoke and glass falling from the windows," another witness said.
"People started running from the building covered in dust. A lot of pieces were flying."
Images of the blast posted on Twitter revealed large clouds of smoke billowing from the building. TV footage showed people being transported from the scene by helicopters.
President Enrique Pena Nieto and Mexico City Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera headed to the scene of the blast.
Mr Nieto said Pemex rescue and security teams were working alongside city authorities to help the injured.
"I am deeply sorry for the deaths of our fellow workers at Pemex. My condolences to their relatives," Mr Nieto said on Twitter.
"At the moment, the priority is to help the injured and protect the physical safety of those who work there."
The president said he has ordered an investigation into the causes of the blast.
Earlier on Thursday, Pemex had reported problems with the electricity in the building in a message on Twitter.
It later confirmed that an explosion had taken place "in the B2 building of the administrative centre".
"There are injuries and damage on the ground floor and mezzanine," it said on Twitter.
Plaster had fallen from the ceiling of the basement and the situation was "delicate", another spokesman for local emergency services was quoted by the Reuters news agency.
Pemex has experienced a number of accidents in recent years.
Last September's deadly blast at a gas plant near the northern town of Reynosa is thought to have been caused by a build-up of gas.

Raptors coach fined for criticizing refs
Feb 1st 2013, 03:47

NEW YORK--The NBA fined Toronto Raptors head coach Dwane Casey $25,000 for criticizing the officials in his team's 93-92 loss to the Atlanta Hawks. Casey blasted officials for failing to call a foul when Toronto's DeMar DeRozan grabbed an offensive rebound then tried to go up for a shot in the closing seconds but was impeded by Atlanta center Al Horford, who appeared to make contact with DeRozan. "I'm tired of this. I'm tired of losing games because of missed calls at the end of the game," Casey said. "I know the league is going to come down on me but I don't care. These guys have fought their hearts out." Earlier this month, the NBA league office said its referees blew a late c...

Tokyo were up 0.35 percent by the break and Sydney climbed 0.65 percent while Hong Kong shed 0.56 percent, Shanghai slipped 0.34 percent and Seoul eased 0.74 percent. Beijing released official figures Friday showing manufacturing activity had seen a slip last month. The purchasing managers index (PMI) came in at 50.4, down from December's 50.6 and below the 51.0 forecast by economists. A score above 50 indicates an expansion in manufacturing activity. US murder convict mistakenly released in Chicago

CHICAGO—Police in Indiana and Illinois are hunting for a convicted murderer who was mistakenly released from custody in Chicago. Authorities said Thursday that they are investigating how and why 44-year-old Steven L. Robbins was released. Robbins was serving a 60-year sentence for murder and weapons charges in Indiana when he was sent to Chicago on Tuesday to face a drug charge. Indiana officials say the drug charge was dropped and Illinois authorities released Robbins without returning him to Indiana. Warrants for the Indiana native's arrest have been issued in both states. Authorities in neither state have said why Robbins was released, but they are asking for the public's h...

Alabama standoff: Negotiators talk to captor
Feb 1st 2013, 03:32

MIDLAND CITY, Alabama— Speaking into a ventilation pipe, hostage negotiators tried to talk a man into releasing a 5-year-old boy and ending a standoff at an underground bunker in rural Alabama that stretched into its third day. The man identified by multiple neighbors and witnesses as 65-year-old retired truck driver Jimmy Lee Dykes was accused of pulling the boy from a school bus on Tuesday and killing the driver. The man and boy were holed up in a small room on his property that authorities compared to tornado shelters common in the area. James Arrington, police chief of the neighboring town of Pinckard, said the shelter was about 4 feet (1.2 meters) undergroun...

Magnus Carlsen Eyeing the World Chess Title
Posted: 01/31/2013 5:44 pm

After triumphing in two major tournaments, in London in December and in Wijk aan Zee in January, Magnus Carlsen is a clear favorite to win the eight-player Candidates event in London (March 15-April 1). The world's top-rated player is the only Western-born competitor in the field, all his opponents having been born in the Soviet Union. The winner of the double-round robin will play in the world championship match against the titleholder Vishy Anand. Why should Carlsen win?

Let's have a look at his recent victory at the 75th Tata Steel Chess tournament in the Dutch coastal town of Wijk aan Zee.

2013-01-27-a13.gif

After seven rounds Carlsen was neck and neck with the world Champion Vishy Anand, both at 5/7. But in the last six rounds with a magnificent burst of energy the Norwegian grandmaster scored five points and pulled away from the field.

He broke two records: moving his rating still higher to 2872 on the February 2013 FIDE list, 62 points ahead his nearest rival Vladimir Kramnik. The other was personal: he was undefeated and won seven games, matching Garry Kasparov's Wijk aan Zee record from 1999. Carlsen has never finished with plus seven in a major tournament before.

Acquiring the Danish grandmaster Pieter Heine Nielsen as a coach will certainly help Carlsen to impove his opening play, perhaps the weakest stage of his game. This is important because many of Carlsen's opponents are known for their thorough opening preparation. Nielsen, who helped Vishy Anand to win four world titles, brings in a lot of experience.

However, Carlsen shines in the middlegame and endgame. That's where the fun begins for him and sets him apart from the rest. He plays with great determination, exploiting every possible chance to win. "I was happy I got the maximum out of every game," he said in Wijk aan Zee. Not everybody is capable of playing like this every single game. He is cool under pressure and very patient.

He gave the impression in Wijk aan Zee that he was bored to play the same openings over and over. But Carlsen was clearly capable to punish unsound opening play. The U.S. champion Hikaru Nakamura not only ignored dr. Tarrasch dictum about bad prospects of a knight on the rim, he put both horses at the edge of the board, allowing Carlsen to build a decisive space advantage.

"It was one of my better games," said Carlsen. "I faced some fresh problems on the board , but I dealt with them pretty confidently. It wasn't Nakamura's best day."

Susan Polgar Chess Daily News and Information: Nikita Vitiugov wins Gibraltar after tiebreak

Susan Polgar Chess Daily News and Information
-- Bringing you updated, timely, fair, and objective chess daily news and information from around the globe -- www.ChessDailyNews.com
thumbnail Nikita Vitiugov wins Gibraltar after tiebreak
Feb 1st 2013, 03:19

Nikita Vitiugov won the traditional Gibraltar Chess Festival that took place on 21-31 January, 2013, after defeating Nigel Short in a dramatic tiebreak in the last round.

Seven players from the 2700 club were the headliners in this year's event, but only three players got to the final round in the shared first place with 7.5/9 points. Nikita Vitiugov was paired against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave. They played a very tactical line, where probably most of the moves where part of their preparation; the game ended in a 36 moves draw when the Russian started to give perpetual check to the Black king.

In the second board, the other leader Nigel Short, played against the Czech star David Navara. They played a quite interesting game that, however, was never far from equality. They signed the peace treaty at move 39. So, until this point, we already knew that there would be a tie-break, because nobody was able to make more than 8 points, and three players already had gotten this score.

The third player to get to 8 points was the Indian Chanda Sandipan, who took advantage of Le Quang Liem's suspicious handling of the opening. The Indian already had a big advantage by move 20 due to the weak position of the White king in the center. The Vietnamese surrendered at move 37 when his opponent threatened to give mate or take his queen.

The English GM Michael Adams tried to squeeze a victory in his game against Kiril Georgiev in order to get to the tie-break, but the Bulgarian defended correctly. The draw was achieved by move 68.

Replay the games with computer analysis

The tie-breaks

In the knockout matches for the title, Vitiugov was paired against Sandipan and Short against Vachier-Lagrave. Both Vitiugov and Short won their first games with black and could advance to the final encounter without much trouble.

The final match between Nigel Short and Nikita Vitiugov started around 18:45 local time. These games would decide who takes home the first prize of £20,000 and who keeps the shared 2nd-4th place, so the stakes were quite high. In the first game, the Russian GM managed to win impressively, showing great technique with almost no time on his clock. The second game was very tense, but Nikita managed to keep cool and draw to get the sole first place in this strong event.

This very tough open left a lot of strong players just a half point behind the opportunity to go for the very coveted first prize. No less than 9 players finished the 10 rounds with 7.5 points. Some of them probably finished the tournament disappointed, given their status in the world of chess. Among them we can mention Vassily Ivanchuk, who arrived as the first seed; Gata Kamsky, who is used to getting good results in open tournaments in the US; David Navara, who arrived in the last minute with high expectations; and Michael Adams, who seemed to be in good form after his performance in the London Chess Classic.

Others were probably happy with their result, despite the fact that they didn't get to the very top. Ivan Salgado Lopez showed stable chess and had a lot of fans cheering for him from neighbor Spain. Ruben Felgaer from Argentina played solidly and managed to avoid losing a single game, while at the same time gaining 13 rating points. The Dutch IM Stefan Kuipers also achieved a good result, he got 7 points after beating the legend Jaan Ehlvest in the last round.

The Women's Prize

The Chinese GM Zhao Xue won the top female prize of £12,000. She drew her game after nearly five hours of play against Vassily Ivanchuk and achieved a score of 7½/10. The 2nd-4th places were shared by the runner-up of the World Cup 2012 Antoaneta Stefanova, the Russian Valentina Gunina and the Ukrainian Anna Muzychuk, who all got 7/10 points.

NBA: Ricky Rubio stands up for fellow Spaniard Pau Gasol
Feb 1st 2013, 02:36

MINNEAPOLIS -- Ricky Rubio is standing up for his fellow Spaniard Pau Gasol, saying he doesn't think it's fair that the Los Angeles Lakers are bringing Gasol off the bench this season. Rubio was asked about his close friend Gasol on Thursday, one day before his Minnesota Timberwolves were scheduled to host the Lakers. The two talk often during the season and seek each other out during tough stretches. It's been a difficult season for Gasol, who was coming off a dominant performance for Spain at the London Olympics. He's missed big chunks of time with tendinitis in his knees and a concussion and hasn't seemed to find a role in Mike D'Antoni's offense. D'Antoni has been starting ...
