Chess in full steam over the holidays Jan 6th 2013, 19:09 CHESS Stephen DannSunday, January 6, 2013 Did chess go to sleep over the holidays? Hardly! There are enough results to fill this column, which also includes info on what's coming in 2013. New Year's Day saw 32 players in the rated section of the Herb Healy Memorial in Somerville, with Lawyer Times of Hyde Park sweeping the field, 4-0.
Just Harvard and Yale represented New England in the 44-team Pan American Intercollegiate in Princeton, N.J. Crosstables are at www.monroi.com. That means plenty of games archived. The North American Open in Las Vegas was the top draw, with 639 players.
The December Open at the Greater Worcester Chess Club was won by John Curdo of Auburn, with Alonzo Ross, Mike Odell, Lou Jacques, Ted Johnson and Justin Wang taking lower prizes. More details of Thursday night events in downtown Worcester at www.chesspals.com, where you can get on the mailing list for Donna Alarie's weekly colorful preview messages.
If anyone age 5 to 14 missed out on yesterday's 3rd Spiegel Cup Qualifier in Cambridge, the last of the four events will be Jan. 20 in Marlboro, the closest one to Worcester featuring novice sections. Details at www.masschess.org, including a number of club and regional open events on the home page.
Natick's Metrowest club begins its January weeknight event Tuesday. Details at www.metrowestchess.org. Fitchburg's Wachusett club continues the Reggie Boone Memorial at Fitchburg State University on Wednesday, results of round one at www.wachusettchess.org.
Next weekend is the Boston Chess Congress as well as the no-cost second Boston Chess Education Expo at the Boston Harborside Hyatt. There will be all kinds of educational materials on display, including books, e-books, DVDs and live lectures too numerous to list here. As of Thursday, there were 52 online entries at www.chessaction.com/tournaments, and should top off near 200, as this year there are additional sections both on top and the bottom. There is free parking and admission to both players and spectators all weekend, starting Friday.
Tomorrow is the deadline to nominate or vote for the 2012 chess book of the year at www.chesscafe.com. As of Thursday there were 14 nominees, five by Americans (two with Mass. connections) with the finals (top 3) open for voting starting on Tuesday. The only e-book nominated has no ISBN, so you should go to www.TacticsTime.com to view excerpts from this fine work, and to sign up for free weekly feeds. Also, site owner Mark Donlan has posted his "Step by Step" quiz, to test your amateur chess knowledge, and all the regular features are also there, including daily news reports.
