BAUAN, Batangas, Philippines—The moving hazy image on the ultrasound screen brought a smile to Elizabeth Ilaga's face as she lay on a makeshift hospital bed. "Lalaki po ba? (Is it a boy?)" she asked the sonologist. The doctor carefully moved the ultrasound or transducer probe across Ilaga's abdomen, repeatedly gliding it over certain spots while looking at the monitor to her left.
