Prodigy Makes Ascent to Chess's Most Rarefied Air
Nov. 8, 2013 5:44 p.m. ET

The matches of the 2013 FIDE World Chess Championship start Saturday in Chennai, India, where national icon Viswanathan Anand, known as the Tiger from Madras, will defend his title against Norwegian Magnus Carlsen, the world's top-ranked chess player since July 2011. The contest is perhaps the most anticipated chess event since American Bobby Fischer outdueled Boris Spassky during a Cold War détente in 1972.

India's first grandmaster, Anand, 43, has been the undisputed champion since 2007. The 22-year-old wunderkind Carlsen, however, is the odds-on favorite. A victory would make Carlsen, already the international face of chess, the second youngest champion in history, behind only Garry Kasparov, considered one of the greatest of all time.

Carlsen's creative, prodigious play has earned him the right to challenge not only for the world title, but to cement a place in history alongside two of the games greatest champions.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte Bobcats said head coach Steve Clifford underwent a successful procedure Friday to have two stents placed in his heart.   Bobcats president of basketball operations Rod Higgins said in a release Friday that Clifford is ''resting comfortably'' in the hospital but it's too early to know when he'll return to work. Higgins says Clifford checked himself into the hospital Thursday night because he was suffering from chest pains.   Clifford, 52, joined the Bobcats this offseason after spending last year as an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Lakers.   The Bobcats are off to a 3-2 start under Clifford.   Hall of F...

Anand seeks sixth title at World Chess Championship
PTI | Nov 8, 2013, 07.20 PM IST

CHENNAI: Billed as the most high-profile clash in chess history in more than 40 years between defending champion Viswanathan Anand and challenger Magnus Carlsen of Norway, the World Chess Championship match begins on Saturday with the experts divided over who will walk away with the coveted title.

The hype surrounding the match between the ageing five-time champion Anand and 22-year-old world number one Carlsen, comparable to the historic clash between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky in 1972, will come to an end when the two rivals take on each other in the opening game at the Hyatt Regency Hotel on Saturday.

Carlsen has the advantage of playing white in the opener but that may not count much as both players get six white and black games in this 12-game November 9-28 contest.

Anand has seen similar situations before while Carlsen is playing his first match in a World Championship. So, while the Norwegian enjoys the tag of a favourite, his mannerisms thus far have suggested that he is gullible like any other youngster in a certain sense.

Twirling in his chair, scratching his head while answering questions during the first press conference on Friday, Carlsen gave the impression of someone tense but exuded confidence once the tete-a-tete was over.

Anand, who has won World Championship matches in 2000, 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2012, is used to open with black pieces in World Championship matches.

Against Vladimir Kramnik of Russia in Bonn in 2008 and against Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria in 2010, Anand had started with black, which is known as a slightly unfavourable colour in the game, and yet won in style. In 2012 though, Anand had white in game one against Boris Gelfand of Israel.

Seeking his sixth title, Anand looked upbeat ahead of the biggest challenge of his life while Carlsen seemed to get the game going. The mind games have just begun and much would unfold once the match starts on Saturday.

Whether Anand's preparation holds him in good stead or Carlsen will play his typical long games to grind out the reigning world champion Indian will have to be seen.

Anand, the undisputed world champion since 2007, faces a strong challenge from the Norwegian sensation in one of the most awaited and most followed World Chess Championship matches in recent history.

Asked how well he has prepared for the event, Anand said, "I worked as I always did. Couple of months of training and I think I am ready to attack. We will see how it goes but I think I am ready to play. I am really excited to play in my home city. I am looking forward to the match starting."

Having won five world titles, Anand said his experience could come in handy in the match.

"Obviously, it is one factor among many. I will bring to bear those factors into my game. Definitely it is one of my resources I would like to draw from. We will have to see."

Carlsen sought to downplay the view of some experts that he will start as favourite in the match.

"I do not know if everyone considers me a favourite but in general I expect to do well in tournaments. If I manage to do well to my abilities and levels, I can win and that will be my mind set here as well," he said.

For Anand, there is an extra motivation to win the match, according to legendary chess player Garry Kasparov.

"While the world champion has never given any importance to matters of chess history or his legacy, he must know that his entire career will get an extraordinary new dimension should he beat the Norwegian wunderkind against the odds," he said.

While Anand has this chance of reinventing himself once more, a motivated Carlsen though should know that he will be world champion one day or the other.

"The difference (between us) is that I have been winning tournaments and he (Anand) has been holding on to his title. It will be an interesting clash between two different ideas of what constitutes the best player in the world," Carlsen had said.

In all, 12 games will be played in the match under Classical System in which both players will get 120 minutes for the first 40 moves, 60 minutes for the next 20 and the 15 minutes for the remaining game with an increment of 30 seconds per move effective from the 61st move.

The first to score 6.5 points will win the match and the remaining games will not be played should it happen before the 12th game. The winner will take home 60% of the prize fund.

In case of a tied score after twelve games, games of shorter duration will be played to determine the winner. However, if the tiebreak stage is reached the winner will get 55% of the total prize at stake.

The players will play two games on the trot followed by a rest day till 10th game and for the last two games, there is rest day after each game. If needed, the tiebreak games will be played on November 28 followed by the closing ceremony.

There is a special illness clause which can delay the match. In case a player reports sick, he has the right to postponement for a day. However, chances of it being used are minimal unless, health wise, something drastically goes wrong for either player.

The match was officially opened on Friday by Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalitha. The Tamil Nadu Government is the official sponsors of the match and have given a cap of Rs 29 crore as the total budget which is inclusive of a prize fund of around Rs 14 crores.

Meanwhile, the final preparations for the much-awaited clash were almost done and the players will be behind a glass cube when the first game begins at 3pm IST on Saturday.

Glass cube was first introduced in the Masters Chess tournament in Bilbao, Spain. The idea is to keep noises from the spectators away from the players. This effective technique does not even let the sound of a huge sneeze sneak in.

The games will be beamed live through internet as well as on Doordarshan's sports channel. The commentary team has the likes of former world champion Susan Polgar, International Master Lawrence Trent and Tania Sachdev.

Nov 9th 2013, 01:00, by Chess Daily News

Battle of 64 squares, biggest since Fischer beat Spassky
Dhiman Sarkar, Hindustan Times
Chennai, November 09, 2013

Viswanathan Anand's defence of the world title against Magnus Carlsen is chess' equivalent of Barcelona-Real Madrid, India-Australia, Nadal-Djokovic or Woods-McIlroy locked in combat for nearly three weeks and 12 rounds till only one of them is standing.

Since 1886 that's how world champions have been decided in chess, a game that India gave to the world through its ancestor Chaturanga in the 6th century but had to wait till 2000 for its first world champion in Anand.

In this age of sub-10 seconds 100m sprints, double centuries in one-day cricket and push button warfare, a battle involving kings and queens not only seems like an aberration in time, it is. And so just to ensure the right mood maybe, the lobby of the Hyatt Regency has large chess pieces arranged on squares in satin, a help booth called Queen's Desk and a hush at odds with most sporting venues in India.

"A billion people could be following this," said Hungarian-American GM Susan Polgar, here as a TV commentator. "This is a battle of generations, one that could usher in a new era." Something like this hasn't happened since Bobby Fischer drew the world's attention to Reykjavik on way to beating Boris Spassky in 1972.

Ahead of such an epic, the contestants and their entourages stayed in seclusion for most of Friday. Carlsen did work out at the gym and his mother and sisters made a blink-and-you-miss appearance. But forget bumping into Anand, even his wife Aruna's phone was with their logistics manager Eric van Reem.

At 43, the five-time world champ is in the November of a career that put India on the chess map and got its biggest contest to his hometown. He is the man who made mental calisthenics desirable in a country that still turns its nose up on sport. Proof of that lies in the fact that it took independent India 40 years to get its first GM.

In trying to explain the importance of Carlsen becoming a GM at 13, his first trainer and GM Simen Agdestein had said: "It is like a 13-year-old winning the Nobel Prize in chemistry." Agdestein still thinks Carlsen is a work in progress, saying: "I sometimes wonder how strong Magnus could have been if he had the discipline of Garry Kasparov."

And that could provide a crucial pointer to this colourful contest in black and white.

Egyptian Chronicles: The Curious Case of Sami Anan

Egyptian Chronicles
Egypt That You Don't Know
thumbnail The Curious Case of Sami Anan
Nov 8th 2013, 23:24, by noreply@blogger.com (Zeinobia)

The name of former general Sami Anan is back again to the front after being absent for nearly year. Suddenly we are having a flood of his photos in the civilian suite in some strange Facebook page called "The popular campaign to demand General Sami Anan to run for presidency" which appeared suddenly from no where last October 19, 2013.
Now the Page admins claim that some of them are ex-military while other some are from none other late Omar Suleiman's presidential campaign and allegedly Ahmed Shafiq's campaign. The Ahmed Shafiq's official campaign denied that it was supporting the former general in the upcoming presidential race.
Anyhow It seems that the campaign has got telephone number at least their office .. in Qena according to the stencils on the buildings there. "They consider the stencils as graffiti"
That so-called popular campaign to convince the general to run for president page is full of personal photos taken for Anan in a civilian suit.

In his salon I think

Reading Al Ahram newspaper in his garden

Smiling to the camera
This is a personal photo-shoot session without doubt.
When I saw these photos , all what I thought about was how big a chief of staff's salary was to have this luxurious villa or even Palace in New Cairo !? yeah I am bit naïve, but you know one of the misconceptions that the army officers are extremely rich living in compounds , well the average army officer or even average major general does not live in such palace or villa despite what is being said about the army's economic empire.
Of course I can not neglect the fact that General Anan has dyed his hair to appear young or how that page is claiming that General Anan is the best presidential candidate to represent revolutionary youth !!! Oh yes to the end of that strange talk that makes you wonder if this is a parody page or what !!?
Needless to say Social media users could not miss this opportunity and made fun of this photos turning them in to memes in less than 72 hours !!

Here is a collection of the photos published by Contemporary Art Page.

Now we got a special Tumblr blog "Electoral Alsh" and Facebook Pages with all General Anan's memes like "Sami Anan's campaign to teach Photoshop" and " Sami Anan's presidential campaign to teach Photoshop"
Of course some have started to ask how the case would be if it were Abdel Fatah El Sisi instead of Anan.
Well Meme makers in Egypt did not leave Egypt's military savior alone in the past weeks especially with his famous quotes like "You are the light of my eyes" .. etc. Still it did not meet the same success after all Anan is from the few people all Egyptians whether revolutionaries , Pro-Islamists and Pro-Military agreed to hate and mock so far.
Yes it seems that Anan united a lot of people to hate him. The revolutionaries can not forget what happened during SCAF rule and how many people were killed during his rule.
The Pro-Military/Pro-Mubarak/Pro-Sisi Anti-Revolutionaries hate him because they believe that he sold the country to the Muslim brotherhood and the Americans not to mention that he turned against Mubarak. Ironically he was not alone in this, Abdel Fatah El Sisi.
The Muslim brotherhood and their supporters hate him because he is a military man.
The Pro-Military media began to attack the General madly too as well. It is not a big secret that it seems there is wrong between the current commandership of the army and Anan , at least this is the reaction you got not from the Pro-Military media only but also the Pro-Military Facebook pages and accounts of army officers and supported unofficially by the army.
When a military Facebook page like Egypt Military Pictures mocks the former chief of staff explicitly then this means something.

I do not understand for real that Sami Anan affair especially that hate relation between the army and its former chief of staff now. It started last September when suddenly we found Al Watan newspaper which is too close to all sort of security apparatuses in the country publishing what they claimed to be Anan's memories about the 25 January revolution.
After releasing those memories in Al Watan , we found the official spokesperson of armed forces  Col. Ali went ballistic issuing a statement warning of publishing alleged memories of ex-military men in that critical time without the army's permission was a dangerous thing to the end of that talk. We knew that he was speaking about none other than Anan.
Amazingly nobody has spoken directly to Anan from the media whether about his alleged memories or about that Presidential campaign.
Anyhow there is something I do not understand from the memories in Pro-Military Watan to that pathetic Facebook page to the silence of the man already.
Will Anan be the scapegoat of the military ?? Will He play a new role in the future ? Will he be the next Omar Suleiman in the presidential elections ??
Are we going to have a face off between Anan and Sisi in the Presidential elections ??
A trivial fact ousted President Morsi issued a presidential decree last August giving immunity to both Anan and Tantawy against accountability. The decree has not been cancelled yet.
In the end , here is a certificate from Sufi order published online about Sami Anan claiming that he is the great grandson of none other than Omar !! Oh yes Omar Ibn El Khatab !! Man if Omar saw Anan and cronies like him !!
