Chess leader to play with big-name prodigy
By Ryan Brinks (April 17, 2013)

This weekend a local chess standout will compete in the presence of a world champion chess prodigy.

Sam Smith, organizer of Jackson County's own Jackson Open tournament and a decorated chess competitor, joins Awonder Liang on the registration list for the seventh Okoboji Open Friday through Sunday.

Liang, now 10, of Madison, Wis., won a world championship for chess players under eight years of age.

He holds the records for youngest player to ever defeat an expert, international master and international grandmaster in tournament play.

And he is the youngest person in the world to ever become a chess master. He did this at the age of 9 years; by contrast, Bobby Fischer became a master at the age of 13.
