Chess Association to embark on an outreach programme

Accra, Aug.12, The Ghana Chess Association (GCA) has designed an outreach programme aimed at promoting the sport in schools and colleges as part of efforts to popularize it in Ghana.

Group Cpt. George Arko-Dadzie, President of GCA, disclosed this at the end of the Third Edition of the Presidents Cup Chess Tournament in Accra.

He said Ghana has a lot of potential in the sport and what was needed was to unearth them, provided them with the necessary training and platform to excel.

According to the president, the GCA was keen on making the sport the number one choice for students in the secondary and tertiary level and has developed the appropriate strategies to meet those targets by the close of 2014. He was confident the concept will be embraced by students and teachers in the targeted sectors and called on corporate bodies to come to the aid of the Association. Group Cpt. Arko Dadzi also expressed appreciation to Reiss and Co. Ghana Limited, a Dutch company that deals in agricultural and veterinary inputs, pharmaceutical, professional IT equipment, industrial and mining equipment for supporting the organization of the Third Edition of the Presidents Cup Chess Tournament.

He said the sponsorship package came at a time many disciplines were struggling with corporate sponsorship to organize events adding that it was the second time, the company was sponsoring the tournament aimed at unearthing new talents as well as keeping them active for international competitions.

The President Cup Chess Tournament was won by Mr. Francis Anquandah and was followed by Mr. Simplice Degondo from Cote D' Ivoire, and Kojo Hasford who amassed the same points.

Angela Ayiku emerged first in the female category, followed by Madam Christiana Ashley, with Dorcas Allotey placing third.
