THE Cebu Chess Association (CCA) is hoping to find gems among the public school kids who are playing in the ongoing grassroots chess training tournament, Chess for Fun, held every weekend in schools around Cebu City.

CCA was tasked by the Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC) to implement the follow-up program, which gave the city the Guinness world record for the largest chess tournament in the world.

"Dako og chance nga makakita ta og mga bag-ong mga players. Based on how large our pool is, which is 120 public schools. Right now we have eyed some potentials, but it will take some time to polish them. We have to take it slowly (There's a big chance we'll discover new players)," CCA Chief arbiter Marvin Ruelan told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.

CCA had made the rounds in the urban barangay schools. This weekend, they will be holding the tournament in the mountain barangays in the north district.

"We will be in the mountain baranggays this Saturday and Sunday. We will be in Lusaran, Mangabon, Kang Atis, Cambinocot, Paril, Mabini, Budlaan, San Jose, Pit-os, Pulang-bato, Binaliw, Agsungot and Vicente Cosido," Ruelan added.

After the school-based tournaments, the top 10 players will advance to the inter-district tournament where the top 10 players in every school district will be picked to join the comprehensive chess training of the CCA.

Last Saturday, the Chess for Fun tournament went to Pardo, Quiot, Bulacao, Labangon, Don Sergio, Tisa, Punta Princesa and Cebu City Science High School and followed it in Camp Lapu-Lapu, Talamban, Bacayan, Camputhaw, Banawa, Lahug and Oppra in Kalunasan.
