Aug 1st 2013, 22:55

MANILA, Philippines—The Philippines has accepted US President Barack Obama's nomination of the next ambassador to Manila pending the latter's confirmation in the US Congress, Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario said on Thursday.   This developed as the nomination of Assistant Secretary Philip Goldberg, current head of the US Department of State's Bureau of Intelligence and Research (INR), has raised concerns among militant groups given his expulsion from Bolivia, his last overseas assignment.   "We've already issued the agreement and I think he will be going through the US Senate. So we're hopeful … we think that he will be a very good ambassado...

LONDON – The BBC apologized on Thursday for accidentally showing an image of Britain's Prince William with a penis drawn on his head.   The blunder happened when the broadcaster's breakfast TV show aired a clip of a promo video for a comedy group who were appearing later on the program.   The image of the second-in-line to the British throne, with a beard and moustache scrawled in black pen onto a picture of the prince in a newspaper flashed up on the screen for a couple of seconds.   He had also acquired glasses, missing teeth and a penis on his head.   It had apparently been missed by BBC editors, but was spotted by several viewers. ...

Aug 1st 2013, 23:07

LOS ANGELES – Canadian director James Cameron is making three sequels to his film "Avatar," which will be released between 2016 and 2018, Fox Studios announced Thursday.   The 2009 film is the highest-grossing movie on record, having netted $2.8 billion at the box office worldwide.   Cameron had originally planned for only two sequels.   "In writing the new films, I've come to realize that 'Avatar's' world, story and characters have become even richer than I anticipated, and it became apparent that two films would not be enough to capture everything I wanted to put on screen," Cameron said in a statement.   The movie featured Sigourney We...

3 years on, breast-feeding law not fully followed
Aug 1st 2013, 23:24

MANILA, Philippines—Three years after the Expanded Breast-Feeding Promotion Act was signed into law, many commercial establishments and work places still have not put up lactation stations that provide privacy and comfort for breast-feeding mothers and their infants.   Sen. Pia Cayetano, chair of the Senate women and health committees in the 15th Congress, made this observation as the Philippines joined in the celebration of World Breast-Feeding Week in the first week of August.   "It has been three years since (the law) was passed and two years since its implementing rules and regulations (IRR) were approved," Cayetano said in a privilege speech Wednesday...
