Teams can still sign up for the statewide Texas Junior Teams Scholastic Championship Chess Tournament being hosted by the United High School Chess Club on Saturday.
Event sponsor Lucy Gutierrez said that although she has hosted a regional and a girls' state championship in Laredo, this is the first time a statewide team tournament will be held here.
Pre-registration deadline for the tournament, which will take place at the high school, is Friday. There is an entry fee of $15 per player, and four players from the same school are required per team. On-site registration is $20.
Current United States Chess Federation membership is required. "All a student has to do to become a rated member is get online and sign up with the USCF and he or she can play this Saturday," Gutierrez said.
"We have kids coming from Kingsville, Corpus Christi, Edinburg and McAllen," she said, explaining that South Texas encompasses Region 7 in the state junior teams divisions.
