Hjörvar Steinn became Iceland's 13th Grandmaster

Tuesday, 29 October 2013 15:37

Hjörvar Steinn Grétarsson became a Chess Grandmaster this past weekend, only 23 years old. He is now the 13th Icelandic Grandmaster.

Hjörvar is therefore the second youngest Icelander to receive the title. Helgi Áss Grétarssonbecame a Grandmaster in 1994, only 17 years old.

Hjörvar won 5 games of 7 at the European Club Cup in Rhodos this past weekend.. He is now on a year break from school to practice more and trains chess playing for 4-5 hours per day.

Hjörvar still doesn't plan on becoming a pro but rather plans to go back to school next fall, probably to study law as many other Icelandic grandmasters have done.

The title Grandmaster is awarded to chess players by the world chess organization FIDE. Apart from World Champion, Grandmaster is the highest title a chess player can attain.

Once achieved, the title is held for life. In chess literature it is usually abbreviated to GM. (Other titles are also often abbreviated: FM for FIDE Master, IM for International Master, and CM for Candidate Master.) The abbreviation IGM for International Grandmaster is also sometimes used, particularly in older literature.
