Britain could face daily fines of 296,000 euros (394,000 dollars) for failing to tell the European Union whether it has fully implemented rules liberalizing its energy market, the bloc's executive announced Thursday.
EU member states had until March 2011 to enact legislation paving the way for a single energy market to come into existence by 2014 - a deadline that none of the bloc's 27 members met.
The European Commission has now referred Britain - along with Bulgaria and Estonia - to the European Court of Justice, proposing that the countries be fined if they fail to show that they have implemented the laws.
